Good, bad, or indifferent the not so flattering label of the “World’s Biggest Gamblers” was recently applied to Australians in general. This label showed up in a recent chart in a newly published issue of The Economist. You should note that Australian legislators are using that sort of evidence to further their efforts to address so-called illegal gambling.
You see, it turns out that addressing what are seen as problem gambling issues is viewed as but the first step in an endeavor towards full regulation of the Australian iGaming Market. You may well recall that Australian legislators began working on this issue back in 2016.
Those initial efforts showed up in the form of the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016. Perhaps you remember that Minister Tudge was in fact one of the strongest promoters and sponsor of this Bill. In its current form, the Bill has gathers quite a bit of support from Australia’s top officials. Interestingly, this support showed up despite what looked to be rather intense lobbying by opponents of the Bill.
Looking at the Bill a bit closer, it is clear from the language written into the Bill that there are now clearly spelled out definitions of what is considered legal gambling and what is viewed as illegal gambling. In no uncertain terms, this Bill makes it illegal for so-called offshore gambling site operators to provide local Australians with either online casino or online gambling options.
All of the above being said, do take note that as of this writing the Bill has not yet made it all the way through the legislative process. Legislative observers report that there are still some legislative issues with the Bill that need to be addressed.
Nevertheless, all signs point to this Bill actually making it all the way through the legislative process and becoming law. That leaves the next obvious question for the average Australian online casino player. The question of how, or even if this will affect online casino players.
Consider that the mere passage of a law will most likely have little, if any effect on the quest for action from online casino fans. One has to look no further than South Africa which already has such laws and rules on the books to see that it has had very little effect.
On the other hand, since the underlying theme behind this Bill is the regulation of online gambling, perhaps Australian legislators will use this as an opportunity to look at how this sort of thing is handled in the U.K. As you probably know, the U.K. set up rules and regulations for legal online casino action some time ago.
This is most certainly an issue to watch for further developments.
